Captain Planet & Speck-Sized Earth
I have some news that may come as a shock to some of you: the world is a huge place—albeit a gigantic place. Yet, why do we say, "it's a small world?" and why does it sometimes feel like such a small little speck we live on?
(That's us. Earth. That speck)
Take your finger and place it overtop of that pixel. How can something so small in the universe actually contain all seven continents, six billion humans, the five oceans, and me?
Somewhere on that pixel is you and I. I'd like to put my finger overtop of it and say I just united the entire world. If only it were that simple . . .
Uniting humanity or coming together as one is something we always talk about when a big disaster happens, a tragic event occurs, or a large exciting occasion takes place. All of the people that occupy that little microscopic speck have always tried to move as one. And that gives comfort to some people, knowing that maybe if we all unite, all of us on this planet, we can achieve exactly what we want or get through this. It's like some kind of invisible unity-network we can tap into.
Now, everyone in the world hasn't all been united at one time before, have they? It's hard to say that that has ever happened. And what does that even mean? Does it mean we're all thinking of the same thing at the same time? Or that we're all thinking of each other at the same time . . . ?
You know, I used to watch this cheesy television show when I was younger. Captain Planet & The Planeteers, it was called. Basically, it was about a bunch of kids who are united by these special rings, given to them by Captain Planet. And they went and save the world by destroying pollution, and keeping the oceans and animals in check, and all that fun stuff. The point is, something brought them together for a purpose. In this case it was Captain Planet.
I've been realizing more recently how I'm united with every single believer on Earth—every single one that takes up residence on planet earth. I can have unity with other humans, sure, but the connection I can have by being united by ONE SIMPLE THING in the Body of Christ on the earth is something that God put specially in His people's hands. It's a patchwork of people, stories, and faith. It says in Phillipians 2, that if we get any comfort from being united with Christ, and from His love, then we need to be like-minded, become one spirit with one purpose, and: " . . . in humility consider others better than yourselves."
We're not stranded on an island, forced to fend for ourselves—others are out there on that pixel! So tap into that not-so-invisible-unity-connection! And somehow that gigantic planet that we live on, and look up in the sky on, pulls inward and we start to realize: "Hm . . . it might just be a small world after all."
